This is a truly amazing piece of Russian doll art that has to
be seen to be fully appreciated. The dolls represent stages of motherhood
with the main, largest doll representing the first stage of motherhood
where beauty and radiance are at their finest. As the dolls grow
smaller, so the mother grows older and perhaps (in her own mind)
she starts to become less important in the lives of her children.
The final doll of the ten piece set is the most simple and least
decorated. Looking at this tiny doll it would be hard to imagine
the strength and beauty that has gone before, but putting the dolls
back together is symbolic in retracing a woman's life to reveal
to everyone the inner core and fulfillment of motherhood itself.
Mesmeric.
As you can imagine from the quality of the dolls, there was a lot
of work and a number of high skilled techniques going into making
them. After preparing and polishing the moulds, made of Linden tree,
a process of pyrography was applied to the individual dolls. Pyrography
means "writing with fire" and is the traditional art of
using a heated tip or wire to burn designs onto natural materials
such as wood or leather. To further decorate the dolls ecologically
friendly acrylic paints were used. To complete the whole process
a special varnish was applied to create a shiny and hardwearing
finish. As a result the gorgeous set of dolls was born to make somebody
happy.
Every doll is unique as artists tend to add something different
to each and every doll set they paint. That’s why Russian dolls
are somehow a reflection of a mood of the artist painting it in
that particular moment. Russian dolls, as in life itself, may have their
own features, characters, colours and moods and can be truly unique
to you.
All our Russian dolls are hollow inside (apart from the last, smallest
doll of each set), they all open in half and fit inside each other.
Please note that there may be some bright spots on the pictures
of some Russian dolls on our website, resulting from photo camera
flash and lights. The actual Russian dolls that you will receive
will not have any of those spots.
