The height of the main Russian doll is approximately 20 cm (8’). The
set is made from Linden tree, there are various paints used with
varnish finish.
This set of Russian dolls is made in a traditional Matryoshka shape
incorporating a Khokhloma pattern style. Khokhloma is an ancient
Russian craft style dating from the 17th Century in the Nizhniy
Novgorod region and is one of the most recognized forms of Russian
decorative painting. The style is often seen on wooden dishes, spoons
and boxes as well as on furniture. It is created using black and
red (sometimes also green) colours on a golden background. Traditional
elements of Khokhloma design are juicy red berries and wild strawberries
as well as flowers and leaves.
The biggest Mother-doll is holding a traditional Russian tea pot
called “samovar”- an essential part of any Russian tea ceremony.
Nowadays, samovar has become one of the symbols of Russia, mostly
as a souvenir piece in modern cities, but still used in rural Russia
when all the family and friends are gathering together at a table
to have endless cups of tea with jams, pastries and other bakery.
The looks and faces of the dolls change with size with the biggest
one being the mother, with big eyes and beautiful long eyelashes,
small mouth with full lips, with the smallest doll being just a
little girl. Have a look at them in that way and you will feel it
as well.
