The height of the main doll is approximately 15 cm (6’), made
from Linden tree, paints and varnish finish.
Matryoshka dolls are made according to the local traditions in
Semenov. They leave more of the natural wood of the mould unpainted.
The dolls are painted using aniline paint and then varnished. At
first the artists carefully draw the outline of face - eyes, lips,
and the flush on the face. Then they “dress” the Russian doll into
a shawl, skirt, and apron and then draw her hands. But the most
important element is the apron itself. It is the big flowers that
are decorating the aprons that make the Semenov Russian dolls so
easily recognisable. The huge bouquet of lush flowers dominates
everything. It is bigger than face, sometimes the same height as
the doll itself. The painting of the apron is distinctive, the flowers
are unusual. There are no flowers like that in nature – they are
always a fantasy of the artist.
These dolls are an absolute classic and they are a must of any
Matryoshka doll collection.
All our Russian dolls are hollow inside (apart from the last, smallest
doll of each set), they all open in half and fit inside each other.
Please note that there may be some bright spots on the pictures of some Russian dolls on our website, resulting from photo camera flash and
lights. The actual Russian dolls that you will receive will not
have any of those spots.
